Natural areas

In Escorca we find ten protected natural areas, some with overlapping areas. Thus, practically the entire term, with the exception of the urban centers and the Ma-10 and Sa Calobra highways, is within the Serra de Tramuntana Natural Area. In the same way, a large part of the territory is included in the Natura 2000 Network divided into eight natural spaces: five Places of Community Importance (SCI), a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) and two that meet both two figures, that is, they were declared LIC and ZEPA.

The Natura 2000 Network is a European ecological network of Special Conservation Zones (ZEC) created in 1992 by Directive 92/43 / EC, on the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora (0 Habitats Directive). It is made up of places that host habitats of community interest and habitats of species of community interest. The lists of both categories appear in the annexes of the Habitats Directive and are those that, on the one hand, stand out for their uniqueness, rarity or that
are threatened and, on the other hand, those that are home to unique, endemic, rare or threatened flora and fauna species.

The Natura 2000 Network also includes the Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA) declared by virtue of Directive 79/409 / EC repealed by Directive 2009/147 / EC of November 30, 2009,
on the conservation of wild birds.

In summary, the objective of the Natura 2000 Network is to guarantee the conservation, in a favorable state of conservation, of certain types of habitats and species in their natural distribution areas
