Les cases de neu

Historical structures used to preserve snow and transform it into ice.

Hikers All year round Cultural Not accessible

Description

For centuries, the collection, conservation and marketing of snow was an important activity in the Serra de Tramuntana. Snow houses were stone constructions located in high, cold areas of the mountain, designed to store the snow accumulated during the winter and transform it into ice.

This ice was used for medicinal, gastronomic and domestic purposes, and became part of the daily life of many towns in Mallorca. In Escorca, several structures linked to this ancient trade are still preserved, which today help us to better understand the relationship between people, the mountain and the natural resources of the territory.
